Hospice care supports patients with serious illnesses. It helps manage symptoms and provides needed services for families.
What is Hospice?
HOSPICE: High Quality Care with Support and Dignity
Hospice focuses on supporting individuals as they approach the end of life. It does not speed up or delay passing. Hospice offers assistance that enhances how patients and families spend their time together. It allows patients to remain at home while caregivers gain instruction and help in caring for them.

Hospice Levels of Care
- Routine Hospice Care – This is the most common type of hospice care, where the patient chooses to receive services at home, in an assisted living community, or a nursing facility.
- General Inpatient Care – This level is provided for pain control or acute symptom management that cannot be managed elsewhere. It begins when other approaches are not effective. Care is delivered in a Medicare-certified hospital, hospice inpatient unit, or nursing facility with registered nurses available at all times for patient care.
- Continuous Home Care – This involves services provided for 8 to 24 hours daily to manage pain or severe symptoms. It mainly includes nursing care, supported by hospice aides, to help patients remain at home during symptom crises.
- Respite Care – This service offers temporary relief to a patient’s main caregiver. Care is provided in a hospital, hospice facility, or long-term care facility with adequate 24-hour nursing staff to meet patient needs.
